College is a time for developing skills, but it’s also a time for discovering purpose. For many students, understanding the why behind their field of study is what gives their education lasting meaning. The Immersive Learning Experiences help students make that connection by giving them a front-row seat to how their work impacts people, communities, and systems.
This immersive opportunity bridges classroom learning with the social, ethical, and civic realities of professional life. Through job shadowing, mentorship, and real-world application, students see the human side of the fields they study, how laws shape lives, how policies guide progress, and how entrepreneurship fuels opportunity.
From Simulation to Social Impact
For Evan Patterson, a Political Science major from Purdue University, the Immersive Learning Experiences in Law and Politics offered exactly that perspective. In Washington, D.C., he attended panel sessions with former congressmen, attorneys, lobbyists, and staffers, and took part in lobbying simulations that demanded quick thinking and clear communication.
Evan’s preparation and curiosity left an impression—one that led to a professional opportunity on Capitol Hill before graduation.
“This experience was a watershed moment in my professional development. Having the opportunity to experience Washington D.C. up close solidified my desire to pursue a career in public service.” — Evan Patterson, Purdue University (Political Science)
Today, Evan serves as a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he helps craft policy and connect citizens with their government. His Immersive Learning Experiences didn’t just clarify his career but also deepened his sense of purpose.
Jacob Petee, an Agricultural Business major from Morehead State University, had a similar revelation in a different field. During an Immersive Learning Experience in Entrepreneurship in Lafayette, Louisiana, Jacob and his peers worked together to develop a sustainable product from concept to pitch. They engaged with startup founders, local business owners, and investors to understand what it takes to turn ideas into viable ventures.
“The experience provided me with a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and helped expand my way of thinking.” — Jacob Petee, Morehead State University (Agricultural Business)
The experience helped Jacob see entrepreneurship not just as business creation, but as community impact. The program’s focus on sustainable development and mentorship later helped him open his own restaurant and bar, using what he learned to invest back into his local economy.
Learning Through Impact
The Immersive Learning Experiences help students recognize that their career choices have ripple effects on their peers, their communities, and the systems they will one day lead. By seeing those effects firsthand, students gain a deeper appreciation for the responsibilities that come with their fields.
Bridge Builder Strategies continues to shape programs that don’t just train skilled professionals but also cultivate informed citizens and ethical leaders. For students like Evan and Jacob, the experience transformed education into impact, reminding them that every decision made in a classroom, boardroom, or office can shape lives far beyond their own.
